CLASS DESCRIPTIONS for Flamenco con Magdalena:
~SEVILLANAS~

Learn this dance for your trip to Spain, or just for fun! Sevillanas, the regional dance of Seville, are performed in schools, parties, weddings, bars, and of course the annual Spring Fair (Feria). Danced in four short sections called coplas, Sevillanas are known for their charismatic, lively gracefulness. Each copla ends with a sudden stop as the dancers strike a pose, inspiring the audience to shout Ole! Men / Women welcome.

INTRO / BEGINNER:
Technique, style, & choreography brought to you straight from the source- Sevilla! Train your ears along with your body by studying the rhythmic patterns of the compas. Play palmas (hand clapping), teach your feet to taconear, and your arms & hands to move fluidly with the music (marcaje). Whether you'd like to perform some day or just get a good workout, join us!
New students & anyone needing a refresher welcome!

ADVANCED BEGINNER:

At this level students dive deeper into Flamenco, polishing their basic skills and coordinating footwork with upper body. Emphasis is on building endurance, stamina, and strength through an intense warm up routine. Technique for lyrical arm & hand movement (brazeo) and posture. At least one year consistent study recommended or with instructor permission.

~INTERMEDIATE~

Private instruction / coaching available by appointment

Dancers encouraged to challenge their understanding of flamenco to develop style and strength. Classes focus on respectful accompaniment of the music which is the essence of Flamenco. Students develop their style and confidence through traditional, clear, movement. Problem solving and attention to detail! Structure (cierres, remates, respiros, etc; Rhythm (lots of practice with palmas!); and tricky (but fun!) escobillas are all covered... so you can find your SONIQUETE!

~PALMAS~

Palmas are the glue that holds Flamenco music, song & dance together. Like good percussion, strong palmas can generate excitement- for example, por Bulerias or Rumba. Palmas also support the dancer, singer, or musician so that he/she may shine alone when performing.

Magdalena cracks open the mystery of palmas as students explore the various sounds, rhythms, effects, and subtleties created just by clapping our hands together!

~CASTANETS~

pa rrrr i a pi ta! Learn to play "los palillos." Castanets are a percussive instrument used in both the Flamenco and Spanish Dance repertoire. Students learn basic drills and skills to gradually create the roll sound as well as coordinate with simple arm movements and marking. Purchase at MENKES or Luthiers in Manhattan.
