| About Magdalena...
When not teaching, performing, or choreographing in New York City, Magdalena lives in Seville, Spain where she trains with legendary gypsies Familia Farruco, Angelita Vargas, and Manuela Carrasco. Other influences have been, and continue to be, Isabel Bayón, La China, Pastora Galván, and Alejandro Granados. In the mid 90's Magdalena helped revive the local Flamenco scene, dancing at hot new venues throughout New York City such as Xunta, Alegrias, Helena’s, and Kaña. Inspired by her mentors at the time, "La Meira" and "La Repompa de Malaga," she was soon using her organic approach and musical background to teach people of all ages. She has been performing ever since as dancer, percussionist, and even singer. In recent years Magdalena has been featured solo artist with the fusion project Madera and Neville Dance Theater. She now joins Michelle "La Caoba" in the Chicago based company Flamenco Triana. Magdalena tours regularly with Learning on Stage while also participating in several Arts in Education programs across the Northeast. In Seville Magdalena can be found performing alongside members of Familia de Pura, Fernandez and Del Gastor families, as well as “por fiesta” style on the streets and in the Flamenco bars of her second home in "La Macarena." Magdalena is best known for her intensive, more traditional style which focuses on the musicality, grace, power, and rhythm of Flamenco. She dedicates herself to inspiring students and audience members alike, sharing her first hand experiences in Spain with the cross- cultural communities of the U.S. Recent Projects: ~ Coached opera singer Janara Kellerman in preparation for her role as Carmen with the New York City Opera. ~ Recorded with internationally acclaimed singer/songwriter Antony and the Johnsons, dancing flamenco footwork to accompany Antony's imaginative lyrics. CD to be released late Winter 2008. ~ Will star in prize-winning filmmaker Lisa Katzman's next documentary, "Flamenco: Here and There", a study of the search for authenticity in art, and the journey several Flamenco Artists take to get there.
